Abstract

I was sitting across the table from a brilliant friend at breakfast yesterday. Years ago, we met in the thick of our first graduate school term. It was a hard couple of months, but few of our difficulties came from the academic expectations of our program. Excited to be challenged by the rigorous study of a Master’s degree, we were more than capable of doing our own work. Instead, it was the additional and often unnecessary struggles in those first years that were unexpected and, often, derailing.

J’étais assise avec un ami très intelligent au petit-déjeuner hier. Nous nous sommes rencontrés durant notre premier semestre d’études supérieures il y a de ça plusieurs années. Ce fut deux mois difficiles, mais notre plus grande préoccupation ne provenait pas des attentes en termes de scolarité liées à notre programme. Prêts à relever le défi d’une maîtrise, nous étions aptes à mener des études rigoureuses. Ce sont plutôt les difficultés supplémentaires, inattendues et souvent inutiles de ces premières années qui étaient plus inquiétantes.
