Abstract: In November of 2017 the Canadian Historical Association | Société historique du Canada Council passed a motion to change the name of the Sir John A. Macdonald prize for the best book in Canadian history to the Canadian Historical Association prize for best book in Canadian history and to seek the support of the membership at the Annual General Meeting in May of 2018. The motion passed with decisive but not unanimous support. A few weeks later, an email went out informing the membership of this change and asking for their feedback. In the months since then we’ve received a wide range of responses from members of the CHA, and a fair number from people who are not members, too. If we divide these responses into three admittedly imperfect categories – in support, in opposition, and asking questions or offering suggestions – the greatest number supported the change.
