L'Histoire et le Web / History on the Web

Abstract

J’aimerais d’abord présenter en quelques mots cette nouvelle chronique Web du bulletin de la Société historique du Canada. Notre objectif n’est pas de faire des comptes rendus mais plutôt de faire découvrir des sites Web de grande qualité qui pourraient intéresser la communauté historique canadienne. En alternance avec John Lutz de l’Université de Victoria, je chercherai donc à vous faire découvrir des trésors cachés du Web et à vous rappeler à l’occasion quelques-uns de ces favoris que l’on a délaissés.

Central to the plot in the late Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy is a compendium of all human knowledge called Encyclopedia Galactica. It is a plot device subsequently employed by generations of lesser science fiction writers(and parodied by Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and something like it has emerged in embryonic form here on Earth. For those of you not from Earth, Wikipedia is the Internet-based reference work of choice for the generation that calls celebrities by their first names (you know: “Brad”, “Jessica”, “Paris”, “Tom” etc.) Alexa.com ranks it as the world’s sixteenth most popular website (that’s sixteenth out of roughly 50 million) but what makes Wikipedia truly extraordinary is that it is exactly what it claims to be: a “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.” There’s no catch. “Anyone can edit almost any page,” the instructions read, “and we encourage you to be bold.”
