Another one for the record books / Une autre année record

Abstract

“I didn’t realize I was a pioneer in labour history,” playwright David Fennario mused in his contribution to the round-table “Theatre, History and Storytelling.” Growing up in the workingclass district of Pointe-St-Charles, he and his friends “preferred to communicate in anti-literate ways.” Whenever Fennario did visit the Atwater library – the oldest lending library in Canada that began as the Mechanics’ Institute of Montreal – he did so in secret. His “personal search for our history” would yield prizewinning plays – On the Job and Balconville amongst them – that gruffly and wittily (much like their author, in fact) evoked the worlds of Pointe-St-Charles.

Il a ajouté que lui et ses amis, qui ont grandi dans le quartier ouvrier Pointe-Saint Charles, préféraient s’exprimer de façon très populaire. Chaque fois que Fennario allait à la bibliothèque Atwater – la plus vieille bibliothèque de prêt au Canada qui était à l’origine le Mechanics’ Institute of Montreal – c’était en secret. Ses recherches personnelles sur notre histoire l’ont amené à produire des pièces qui ont remporté des prix, dont On the Job et Balconville. Ces dernières évoquent, d’un ton bourru et empreint d’humour à l’image de l’auteur, l’univers de Pointe-Saint-Charles.
