A Word from the President / Mot du président

Abstract

In 1922 the Historic Landmarks Association of Canada, founded in 1907 to plan Quebec’s tercentenary celebrations and to promote commemoration of the country’s historic sites, renamed itself the Canadian Historical Association / Société historique du Canada. The new association expanded the parent society’s mandate to foster the study of history, which over time became its principal concern. The CHA’s stated goal was the “encouragement of historical research and of an intelligent public interest in the history of our country, as well as the co-ordination of the efforts of provincial and local historical societies throughout the country”.

La Historic Landmarks Association of Canada, fondée en 1907 afin de planifier les célébrations du tricentenaire de Québec et de promouvoir la commémoration des lieux historiques du pays, a pris le nom de Canadian Historical Association / Société historique du Canada en 1922. La nouvelle association a élargi le mandat de la société mère d’encourager l’étude de l’histoire, qui au fil du temps est devenue sa principale préoccupation. L’objectif déclaré de la SHC étant de faire la « promotion de la recherche historique et d’une participation intelligente du public dans l’histoire de notre pays, ainsi que la coordination des efforts des provinces et des sociétés historiques locales à travers le pays ».
