Abstract: Who in their right mind would commit to reading 200 books in a year? asked most of my friends when I explained how comprehensive examinations work. And it is indeed a difficult but crucial phase in the experience of a Ph.D. student. As a last segment of my analysis of a survey on graduate students' experiences, I look at how comprehensive exams have been experienced, enjoyed and/or painfully completed. /
