Abstract

Les historiens sont sûrement ravis de savoir que l’histoire est omniprésente dans l’actualité depuis un certain temps maintenant. Que ce soit le changement dans le mandat et le nom du Musée canadien des civilisations au Musée canadien de l’Histoire ; le débat sur la commémoration de la guerre de 1812 par le gouvernement Harper ; l’emplacement proposé du Monument national de l’Holocauste à Ottawa et celle de la statue Mère Canada sur l’île du Cap-Breton, et le raisonnement derrière ces projets ; ainsi que la popularité de l’histoire en général, non seulement parmi les praticiens, mais auprès du grand public et des médias,1 l’histoire a atteint un niveau de notoriété qui est enviable à une époque où la recherche en sciences humaines est souvent tournée en dérision comme étant inutile dans la société d’aujourd’hui.

Historians are undoubtedly delighted to know that the subject of history has been a prominent feature in the news for quite some time now. Whether it be the change in the mandate and name of the Canadian Museum of Civilization to the Canadian Museum of History; the debate over the commemoration of the War of 1812 by the Harper government; the proposed placement of the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa and that of the Mother Canada statue on Cape Breton Island, and the reasoning behind these projects; as well as the popularity of history in general not only with practitioners but with the public at large and the media, history has attained a level of notoriety that is enviable at a time when research in the humanities is oft en derided as being futile in today’s society.
