Abstract

Reading historical classics can be both inspiring, recognizing the insights of past writing, and demoralizing, feeling a sense of déjà vu. Before writing this column, I re-read Irving Abella and Hesh Troper’s None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe, 1933-1949, the 1983 book that exposed a shameful history of governmental decisions and widespread anti-semitism blocking the entry of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazism, and after the Second World War, searching for a home. /

La lecture de livres d’histoire classiques peut être à la fois inspirante, en remarquant le discernement des écrits du passé, et démoralisante, en éprouvant un sentiment de déjà-vu. Avant d’écrire cette chronique, j’ai relu le livre d’Irving Abella et de Hesh Troper publié en 1983, None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe, 1933-1949, qui exposait l’histoire honteuse des décisions gouvernementales et de l’antisémitisme généralisé qui ont bloqué l’entrée de réfugiés juifs qui fuyaient le nazisme et qui, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, étaient à la recherche d’un foyer.
