Art masterpieces would be necessary to the making up of the landscapes, which could play the part of an "imago". So the society would be able, thanks to its masterpieces and landscapes, to catch a glimpse of itself as a whole. Therefore, the æsthetic approach and shaping of one country would start the emerging process of national identity.

La géographie classique interprète les établissements comme des équipements utiles assumés politiquement, ce à quoi s'ajouterait un perfectionnement esthétique propre à donner du travail aux artistes. La géographie structurale se démarque de cet a priori empiriste, en explicitant la primauté de l'art sur l'utilité dans l'engendrement des établissements modernes. La présente élaboration propose une incursion sur ce terrain.
